Program Note

Kafka is a dance film based on a scene from Haruki Murakami’s novel 'Kafka on the Shore'. The origins of the movement are a combination of what I believe served the narrative and my own personal interest in capturing muscularity on camera. A brief synopsis of the scene is as follows; two men have been travelling through Japan, one of the men, who is quite elderly passes away in his sleep. When the remaining character is left by himself, a white creature or thing as described in the book crawls its way towards him with obvious malicious intent. The character tries everything to attempt to destroy the creature however it is completely resistant. It is only when the character completes a task (flipping over the entrance stone) that the white thing dies and dissipates with relative ease. “Once he’d closed the entrance, taking care of the white object was surprisingly simple.”
