Xenogenesis

Development shown as a part of Lucy Guerin Inc's and Temperance Hall's Out of Bounds Program

Xenogenesis is a new solo dance work in development that explores themes of science fiction, artificial intelligence, and human nature.
The narrative follows an A.I. and its process of appearing and behaving human. Throughout the work the subject discovers the limitations and possibilities of their new body, and attempts to blend in with the creators who have abandoned them. Despite being born from humanity and appearing physically human, the machine will always be completely and permanently different to its creators.

This work will be heavily influenced by the costume which will consist of numerous extension cords plugged into the body of the A.I./performer, these cords will not be connected to electricity and are purely an aesthetic choice. As the A.I. furthers its endeavours to appear truly human, it disconnects from the cords and begins to understand its new capabilities.

Through this work I endeavour to raise questions in regards to the philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. The core question being - what does it mean to be human? From this, we examine other related questions such as are A.I. capable of original thought? Can they experience emotions? Can they be self-aware? And finally, can they appear totally human?
