Program Note

Red Wing Angel draws inspiration from Nirvana's 3rd album In Utero. The album cover depicts a woman through the lens of a partial x-ray showing her various muscle tissue and organs. Behind her are red angel wings. I felt very drawn to the image and was excited about the possibilities of being able to further explore muscularity on camera (an interest that is prevalent in my earlier film KAFKA). My process was to work backwards, knowing the final image would be reminiscent of the album cover. This film's aim was to recreate this album cover through movement, lighting, sounds and colour, effectively bringing this still image to life. Throughout this film, we witness the transformation of a woman as she sprouts wings. The wings themselves appear to have their own consciousness and grow and shift in colour until we are left with an image reminiscent of In Utero
